Breadwinners Book Club: Book 1 Review

Welcome to the first Breadwinners Book Club wrap-up!!  Can you believe it's already been a month since we started this reading journey together?

ICYMI we started this book club because it was one of our team's goals this year to read more and so we thought let's turn our reading goals into a community affair. And here Breadwinners Book Club was born. Each month, we're handpicking a gem from the shelves – think a business, money, career or self-development vibe. We're talking about books that'll not only tickle your brain cells but also fuel your journey towards personal and financial growth.

First up we have a business memoir: Hanging by a Thread by Erin Deering

Short synopsis:

Erin Deering, co-founder of Triangl, walked away from a dream life in Monaco and a thriving multi-million dollar business due to breakdowns, breakups, and self-reflection. Despite the brand's meteoric rise, she faced challenges like financial losses, mental health struggles, and personal setbacks. Hanging by a Thread delves into the reality behind the success, revealing the highs and lows of entrepreneurship and the importance of prioritising mental well-being while chasing dreams.

Anyway time flies when you're reading with friends, doesn't it? Now that we've all had a chance to devour "Hanging by a Thread" by Erin Deering, it's time to gather 'round for a book chat and wrap up our thoughts on this month's read.

We don't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't finished the book yet (no judgement—it's all about pacing yourself!), but we asked you guys on IG Stories what you thought and we can’t wait to share. So here goes….

We asked on a scale of one to “I can’t even put it down long enough to answer this question,” how would you rate Hanging by a Thread and here’s what you voted:

16%  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 stars)

29%  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)

31%  ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 stars)

24%  ⭐️⭐️/⭐️ (1 or 2 stars)

We didn’t want to share the SOTM team’s ratings and sway your vote, but turns out we rated it pretty similar to the community, on average we rated it 3.25 stars.

Also we have established our own rating system combining the team and community to a bread scale, because it only makes sense for a Breadwinners book club, right?!

Here’s how it works

🍞 1 = Stale Bread (not worth it)

🍞🍞 2 = Unsliced Loaf (good but not great)

🍞🍞🍞 3 = Sourdough (most people enjoy but not for everyone)

🍞🍞🍞🍞 4 = Freshly Baked French Baguette (its hard to beat)

🍞🍞🍞🍞🍞 5 = Best thing since sliced bread (you don’t get better than this)

So we officially announce Hanging by a Thread:

🍞🍞🍞 Sourdough

What does that mean? Most people will enjoy it, will it be their favourite book, possibly not but it does have some great insights into running a successful business and the stressors and hard times that come along with it.

So who would we recommend this book for?

some thoughts, feelings and hot takes on the book

From the community

  • It left me feeling sad for Erin. She didn’t seem happy. Money isn’t everything -

  • Loved the raw honesty on her eating disorder habits and toxic habits to try and control her chaos

  • Was very insightful into the sacrifices people make when starting their own business!

  • I enjoyed learning about the business but it was very repetitive and they should have hired people

  • Felt incredibly sad for her, but also jealous, frustrated then happy she found her way

  • There were a number of missing pieces I felt in the start up of the business

  • I really enjoyed it and loved hearing her journey to success

From the SOTM team

  • Easy read

  • Some might find her occasional venting a bit too much like a diary entry

  • At times repetitive

  • Had some great lessons for anyone wanting to undertake a side hustle or build a business on the importance of having support.

  • Highlighted you never really know how a person is feeling and what they're going through, you would think buying whatever you want and living a luxe lifestyle in Monaco would be  a dream but mental health really comes above money and everything else

Missed giving your feedback, no worries just because we have finished for the month doesn’t mean we don’t want to hear your thoughts in the comments…, what did you all think of "Hanging by a Thread"?
