Breadwinners Book Club: Book 2 Review
Can you believe we’re wrapping up the second book of our Breadwinners Book Club, 2024 is flying by so fast!
If you're tired of feeling like you're drowning in a sea of negativity at work, this month’s book “Toxic at Work" by David Gillespie might just be your lifeboat.
P.S. We asked our community if they were in a toxic workplace and 50% said their workplace is toxic, sorry but that number is absolutely HUGE and it’s not ok! So we know a lot of you will get something from this months read!!
A little overview:
Imagine you're crushing it at work, but suddenly, you realise your office has become a battlefield of toxic vibes. That's where David Gillipse's book, "Toxic at Work," saves the day – it's like a survival guide for navigating these sticky situations.
Gillipse dives into all the toxic behaviours and personalities you might bump into at work, from the office gossip to the passive-aggressive boss. And throughout the book, Gillipse gives you strategies to handle it like a pro.
He shares practical tips on setting boundaries, dealing with difficult colleagues, and even reclaiming your sanity in the middle of chaos. It's like having your own personal work-safe mentor!
We wouldn't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't finished the book yet (no judgment—it's all about pacing yourself!), but we reached out on IG Stories to hear your thoughts, and we're itching to spill the beans. So, here's the scoop...
And before we get too deep and you think “but wait, i’m not in a toxic workplace” firstly thank goodness you’re on the lucky side but stick around because as those of you who’ve already read it would know “Toxic at Work” offers crucial lessons on setting boundaries, spotting toxic behaviours and safeguarding your mental health with invaluable insights not just for the workplace but also in personal relationships and other life scenarios as well. So really anyone would probably get benefits out of reading this book!

Here’s how it works

🍞🍞 2 = Unsliced Loaf (good but not great)
🍞🍞🍞 3 = Sourdough (most people enjoy but not for everyone)
🍞🍞🍞🍞 4 = Freshly Baked French Baguette (its hard to beat)
🍞🍞🍞🍞🍞 5 = Best thing since sliced bread (you don’t get better than this)

SOME THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND HOT TAKES ON THE BOOK
From the community
Psychopaths literally cannot change, there was nothing I could have done
It explained so much about a previous boss and made me glad I’d left
Was disheartening to learn many ex’s and family members fit this too well
Hearing all the examples does make me reflect and realise how many psychopaths I’ve come across so far without really understanding what it is was at the time. I think I’ve come across so many that show some of the traits but not all of them. Maybe they are the psychopaths that have learnt how to react in a way that seems like they show some empathy….
It made me recognise the kind of work environments psychopaths thrive in
From the SOTM Team
A true eye-opener for any employee stuck in their role and not sure what they can do to better their toxic work situation with those toxic work colleagues that we all know too well
I would never have selected this book to read on my own based on the boring cover in my opinion, but I am SO GLAD I read this book
The scenario presenting each person’s point of view was so insightful and interesting to see how you never know what someone is thinking or their motives
I found it to be relevant to not just a workplace but toxic friendships, family members and even past relationships
ICYMI we started this book club because it was one of our team's goals this year to read more and so we thought let's turn our reading goals into a community affair. And here Breadwinners Book Club was born. Each month, we're handpicking a gem from the shelves – think a business, money, career or self-development vibe. We're talking about books that'll not only tickle your brain cells but also fuel your journey towards personal and financial growth.
