Investing habits: a year in review

Anyone else excited to flip that calendar to a fresh new year?

What a surprising year we’ve all had. Though for most of us the last two years are a little difficult to distinguish, a lot of good has come out of the chaos.

To celebrate all that went right in 2021, we thought we’d take a look back at how far we’ve come in relation to financial progression and in particular, the trends we’ve seen when it comes to investing trends that quantify exactly what all of your hard work in listening to the podcast and being part of our community have achieved.

Our good mates over at Superhero the investing platform we tend to chat about frequently on the pod, mainly because we’re big fans of their $0 brokerage fee on ETF's and US shares conducted a recent survey that was brimming with stats we need to share with you.

The survey was of 3,725 people and our favourite findings were as follows:

1. More than 50% of respondents invest 'To turn my money into more money’

2. Female investors on the Superhero platform are more experienced than the males

3. Overall approximately 50% of investors started investing in the last 12 months

4. 53% of female respondents said their investing style was ‘calculated’ rather than considering themselves cautious, a risk avoider or risk taker.

5. Almost 20% of females said they felt very confident about their financial position in the next five years and 54.3% are somewhat confident - this is massive!

We’ve also seen you all in our community absolutely crushing it when it comes to conversations around investing. One of our favourite things to see is the way you support each other and teach one another what you’ve learned along the journey.

As Jess and George discussed on their very own Friday Drinks episode of the show recently, neither of them knew anything about investing before they joined the community and it’s incredible to see that so many of you had the same experience and are now just as passionate about investing as Victoria Devine herself.

Of course if you’re reading this and are feeling out of the loop when it comes to investing, the good news is the tools that have helped so many of our listeners and community member educate themselves are all available to you for free All you need to do is pop on the pod (re-listen if you need to) and ask as many questions as you like in the amazingly supportive SOTM community on Facebook.

Here’s to another big year ahead friends - we’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a good one. A big thanks to the team at Superhero who helped bring this blog post to life and who generously shared their fascinating data with us. For those who haven’t seen our favourite ad on TV, Superhero is an online investing platform that gives you the opportunity to invest in Australian and US shares, as well as ETFs. It also allows you to invest your super into shares and ETFs without going down the road of having a selfmanaged super fund. Another mega perk of Superhero is that brokerage is $0 for US shares and ETFs and it’s just $5 for Aussie shares, which at SOTM we would definitely call a money win! Visit their website to find out more about their fab platform and they'll shout you a FTEC ETF when you fund your account with A$100 or more in your first 30 days.
